No.1455

From Carter.

Your telegram No.1 032.

I met Tyrer off the plane this morning; it touched down late at 08.40 hours B.S.T. He was most anxious to avoid all contact with the Press and this we were able without much difficulty to do. His chief anxiety was that the Press would ferret him out over the weekend. We think this unlikely since, to judge by this morning's showing, their interest is very slight.

2.

He appeared to be in a slight state of shock (although one has to make allowances for the journey). He said he felt very bitter about the turn of events and expressed bewilderment about the reasons for it: he is, as you say, "uncomprehending"

3. This attitude may make for difficulties when Galsworthy sees him at 12.00 hours B.S.T. on Monday, 17th July, in the absence of any detailed knowledge here of the background to your decision. It would be very helpful if you could let us have further details by then and if, in particular, you would indicate to what extent you have informed him of the grounds on which his retirement was called for.

Distribution:

P.S. to Minister of State

Sir Saville Garner

Sir A. Galsworthy

Mr. W.S. Carter

Mr. A.W. Gaminara
