Am sorry to have to tell you that last
Wednesday Gass reported that he, the CBF and his
Adviers had had to remove Tyrer from command of
Hong Kong Police.
for this action.
We at once cabled our support
Grounds on which it had to be
taken were conveniently set out in subsequent
telegram from Hong Kong, which I am repeating for your information in my immediately following
telegram.

Tyrer left Hong Kong on Friday. Before his
departure Hong Kong Government, with our agreement, put out statement to effect he was returning for
consultations with Commonwealth Office. All
telegrams on this subject have been Top Secret, and
we are taking utmost precautions to keep story from
press.
