Your telegram No.1074.
Tyrer.
We have had several talks with person named. He still appears uncomprehending and to be in some measure still dazed by what has happened. But having talked with him we are more than ever convinced that your decision was right and necessary.
2. He is not withdrawing his request to retire, but is extremely anxious to be able to retire with dignity. With this in view, we have arranged that, for the period of his leave, he will be attached to the Secretary of State's Police Advisory Staff. Precisely what duties he will be engaged on has not yet been decided.
3.
Unfortunately U.K. press has tonight picked up reports, which we are pretty sure emanated from Hong Kong, that Tyrer has been "sacked by Mrs. Hart". We are therefore using following form of words, to which Tyrer has agreed, in answer to preas queries.
Begins.
For health reasons Mr. Tyrer is unable to return to Hong Kong, and has sought permission to retire from the public service. The Secretary of State has in the circumstances given his approval to Mr. Tyrer's retirement. But Mr. Tyrer has agreed to serve in an advisory capacity in the Commonwealth Office for the next few months, in order that his knowledge and experience may continue to be available to the Secretary of State during this period.
Ends.
You will no doubt wish to put out a similar announcement locally.
