the decision need not be given to the officer. Despite this provision, however, Lord Shepherd hoped that if Mr. Tyrer wished to withdraw his letter of retirement, he would be given a statement of the complaints against him.
Lord Shepherd made it clear that the decision must be
one for Mr. Tyrer to take himself, but Lord Shepherd's personal view was that in all the circumstances the better course would be to allow his letter of retirement to stand. Lord Shepherd added that if Mr. Tyrer wished to take up other employment, he could call on Lord Shepherd to give him a good recommendation.
The meeting took place just before Lord Shepherd was due to leave for Jamaica and Lord Shepherd suggested that Mr. Tyrer should think over his position and let Lord Shepherd know his decision when Lord Shepherd returned to the office on 11 September.
