Police as I was doing political work here for Taiwan.

Mr. X put me in touch with Mr. CHU (identified as accused).

I met him first sometime in April 1961. I first met him in the

Tai Tung Restaurant, Central. Present on that occasion were Mr. CHU (identified), Mr. X, a Mr. and Mrs. WONG and myself. Some

other guests arrived later. On that occasion Mr. X introduced me to Mr. CHU. When I arrived at the restaurant, Mr. X and Mr. CHU were sitting on a sofa in a room on the 2nd floor of the restaurant. When Mr. X saw me he stood up and signalled Mr. CHU to stand up

also. He introduced me to Mr. CHU as Mr. CHAN and the accused to

me as Mr. CHU. After the introduction Mr. X told me that Mr. CHU

was rather busy. Mr. CHU bid us farewell and Mr I saw him to the door. I asked bir. X then who Mr. CHU was and Mr. X told me that

Mr. CHU was responsible for a section in Special Branch; he did not say which section, but he did say that Mr. CHU was his good friend.

Approximately 3 to 4 weeks later I saw Mr. CHU (identified) again at Tai Tung Restaurant. On this occasion at approximately

1200 hours I received a telephone call from Mr. X to go to the Tai Tung Restaurant. When I got there I saw Mr. X and Mr. CHU sitting at the same table on which there were 2 bottles of beer and some food. These two congratulated me saying that the matter was not serious and that I had nothing to fear. (The inference behind this is that although Special Branch knew of my existence in Hong Kong they did not know much about me). The congratulations were mainly concerned with the fact that I had not been arrested by Special Branch.

Prior to this meeting at the Tai Tung I had met Mr. X at the Ying King Restaurant about 10 days previously. I arrived late and Mr. X was the only person there. He told me that Mr. CHU had left. I wish to make it clear at this stage that up to the meeting

in the Ying King Restaurant Mr. X had never told me that Mr. CHU was S/Sgt. CHU Leung. Mr. X produced a slip of paper on which there were 5 Chinese characters saying "Mr. CHAN be careful". I knew what this warning meant and I asked Mr. X whether or not I should spend a night in N.T. It was arranged I should telephone Mr. X at 1200 hours the next day. When I telephoned I was told by Mr. X that the matter was not serious and that I should go to the Tai Tung Restaurant

to meet him at a later date.
