by the Police twice. I did not know where CHU Leung lived so I

telephoned Mr. X and told him what

had asked me to do.

After 2 or 3 days Mr. X visited me at the Z Business. He told me

that this matter was true, but said that since Mr. 'I' was only an

indirect friend, how much could he offer in order that the matter

could be fixed. Two or three days later I was told by Mr. X

that he had made an appointment with CHU Leung at the Sing Chow

Restaurant. He asked me to ask

to be present. and made the arrangement. A meeting

telephoned

between CHU Leung, Mr. X,

subsequently at the Sing Chow Restaurant.

and myself took place

Mr. X told

I

that he did not know Mr. 'I'. He said that Mr. CHU Leung had

made enquiries and found the matter to be true. He asked CHAN how

much money Mr. 'I' could offer to settle the matter. CHAN replied

that Mr. 'I' received a monthly salary of only $100 H.K.

Mr. X

said that if Mr. 'I' could offer $2,000 H.K. the matter could be

settled.

said he believed Mr. 'I' could never afford

such a large sum of money. Mr. X then said that until Mr. 'I' had

the money they would let the matter drop. The party then broke up.

CHU Leung was present the entire time but did not say anything.

In the middle of October I received a telephone call from

CHU Leung who asked me to go to the Sing Chow Restaurant. At that meeting CHU Leung (identified) said that he was in financial difficul-

ties and asked me for a loan of $5,000 H.K. I said I was only a foki

and as hr. X was absent from the Colony in Taiwan I could not raise

such a large sum of money. Afterwards CHU Leung asked me whether I

could afford $2,000 H.K., but I said no. CHU Leung asked me to

help him as much as I could. The next day I received a telephone

call from CHU Leung who asked me to go to the Sing Chow Restaurant.

There CHU Leung asked me whether I could afford $2,000 H.K. I said

I could only afford $300 H.K. at the most. CHU Leung said he would

wait until Mr. X's return. At this meeting when I arrived at the

restaurant only CHU Leung was present. As we were leaving the

restaurant CHU Leung called a young man Mr. 'J' to go. Then CHU

Leung told me that Mr. 'J' was his subordinate and that his name

was Mr. 'J'. I do not know the reason why CHU Leung introduced me

to Mr. 'J'. I have seen Mr. 'J' since. He delivered a letter to

me once outside the H.K. Restaurant. The letter said that the

premises of

in Ferry Street would be searched that evening

the 19th and asked me whether or not CHAN was our associate.
