Chinese territory with proposals as to how the various demands were to be met. A time limit of 72 hours was set for acceptance of the full Chinese demands. As a result, on the following day, delegation comprising Borges, the Chief of Cabinet, and Assuncao, a barrister, accompanied by an interpreter, met C.F.G. representatives at Kung Pei in Chinese territory, They returned home after four hours of inconclusive talks. The delegation went to Aung Fei again on 26th, 28th and 30th December, but were still unable to reach a settlem nt. The seven K.M.T. agents in Portuguese hands had been returned to China on 20th December, but at the end of the month negotiations regarding the wording of an official public "confession" and "apology" were still continuing. In particular the Portuguese were reluctant publicly to admit having committed a "crime" in handling the riots. At the last meeting of the two parties the C.F.G. set no time limit on the Macanese acceptance of their demands, and it was apparent that, while still pressing to the limit for settlement, their attitude had become less aggressive, no doubt because of the Macau government's willingness to accede to most of what was asked.
