"(i) that Cerveira, (Colonel Commanding Portuguese

Military Units), the executioner who despatched troops to kill Chinese indiscriminately, be severely punished immediately, and that the prime villains Figueiredo (Chief of Police), Antunes, (Senior Police Officer involved in the Taipa incident), and Andrade (District Officer of Taipa Island) be publicly dismissed and severely punished;

(ii) that the curfew be cancelled immediately, the

arrests of Chinese be stopped immediately, the Fascist atrocities, butchering and oppressing Chinese be stopped, and that the personal safety and freedom of Chinese in Macau be given absolute protection;

(iii) that full compensation be paid to the injured for

losses sustained, immediate payment of compensation be made to families of the deceased, full liability for funeral expenses be assumed, and funeral arrangements and memorial services for the deceased must not be interfered with;

(iv) that all those Chinese arrested during the bloody

Fascist activities be released immediately, and that the names of all those killed and injured be truthfully announced;

(v) that the five demands of the Taipa Kaifongs and

the five demands of the M. cau Chinese Federation of Students be implemented immediately;

(vi) that a written and signed apology be tendered to

the Chinese in Macau which is to be given full publicity in the press, and announced over the radio, and also an assurance to be given that there would be no further incidents of oppression of Chinese compatriots in Macau."

The document also warned that the Macau authorities must give an carly reply accepting the demands, or they would be held responsible for the consequences. To lend weight to their protests the C.P.G. organised a number of rallies of many thousands attended by Red Guards as well as residents of Macau in the immediate vicinity of the enclave and also in Canton. These took place during the period between the 10th December and the end of the month.

On 12th December, it was announced on Radio Vila Verdo, that the Macau_government had accepted the four demands made by the Kwangtung Provincial People's Committee. Two days later, an invitation from the Governor of Macau was issued, over Radio Vila Verde, to the all circles" delegation to call at Government House on 15th December to receive the official acceptance of their demands. This invitation was not accepted, however, and the delegation asked for the Governor's reply to be sent to the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce.

During the latter half of the month the four principal Macau Government officials named by the Chinese communists (see paragraph 5(1) above) as having been responsible for the Taipa incident and the riots passed through Hong Kong on their way to Portugal. There were no incidents on their departure from Macau or while they were in transit through Hong Kong.

On 21st December, the Kwangtung Provincial People's Council demanded that the Macau Government send officials to
