ANNEX A TO
CINCFE 3031/6130/12
Datod 24th September 1968
Hangar Space
32. There is one T2 Hangar at RAF Kai Tak and this is only sufficient to house, under typhoon conditions, the existing Whirlwinds, HKAAF aircraft and the proposed in-use Hunters. It would be necessary therefore, to store the three reserve Hunters at HAEC whero there is adequate typhoon hangarage.
Works Services
-
33. Proposals are now being made by RAF Kai Tak to extend the already over- crowded Operations Building by some 1,500 sq ft. mainly to accommodate No 28 Squadron and visiting detachments. Should this be approved, the building will · need to be extended by about 350 sq ft to provide accommodation specifically for the Hunter unit. Capital expenditure would not be required elsewhere in respect of works services for the Hunter unit.
Unit MT
34. Unit MT requirements would be one Light Passenger Car (Class B) and one Landrover (Class B).
Logistic Support
35. Broad details of logistic support required by the Hunter unit are given at Appendix 2.
SCHEME B
Concept
36. For some time now, some flying units in the United Kingdom have contracted out to civilian organisations virtually all aspects of aircraft servicing and turn-round. It is believed that such an arrangement has not been applied to an operational squadron because its operational deployment and mobility would be severely curtailed, industrial troubles could interfere with the demands of air operations, the handling of sophisticated and classified weapons by contract civilians could be awkward, and the requiroment for 24 hour seven day operational capability could so raise contract costs as to prove uneconomical. However, in the unusual circumstancos attached to the Hunter unit at Hong Kong, these factors are of much less significance.
37. It has already been stated that HAEC should not undertake any servicing of armaments, weapons, safety equipments, and SIF, and that HAEC is more than competent to handle every other aspect of Hunter servicing. This scheme envisages:
3. Normally, a five day working week.
b.
C.
A very small RAF element, including six pilots, plus a few ground staff.
Every other aspect of aircraft handling and servicing undertaken by
HAEC.
d. Very limited support by RAF Kai Tak.
e.
One additional controller at 117 SU and one additional ATC officer as for Scheme A.
