The Committee had before them a Secretary!s. Minute--(4-)........ covering a report (2) by the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, on his recent visit to Hong Kong, which they had requested (3). SIR RICHARD HULL said that before considering the recommendations made by the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, in his report, they would wish to discuss the problem of the strength of the garrison in Hong Kong. In the paper (4) which had been discussed at the meeting of the Defence and Oversea Policy Committee on Friday 28th July 1967, the question of retaining the present permanent garrison at 63 units was mentioned, but had not been discussed at the meeting. It had been previously agreed that the size of the garrison would be reviewed by the Defence and Oversea Policy Committee in September but he considered that a note should now be sent to the Secretary of State for Defence to clear this point before September. There was to be a small Ministerial mccting on Hong Kong, later that wock, which would provide a suitable opportunity.
In discussion of the recommendations made by the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, in his report (2), the following points were made:
a.
The Committee noted that the reinforcing battalion sent to Hong Kong from Singapore in June would remain there until after the "double tenth" celebrations in October 1967
