NOTES:

(a) Plans 5, 6 and 7 are included for completeness, though they are hardly relevant in present circumstances. Plan 9, for defence of Thailand against attack by North Vietnam, is in course of preparation, and force declarations may be called for later this year.

(b) Additional forces principally non-organic logistic units

would be needed in any case to support SEATO operations. For example, under Plan 4 about 3,000 men would have to be brought out from the United Kingdom in addition to about 4,000 men from logistic units already in Malaysia/Singapore. (The number under Plan 8 would be smaller.) Any withdrawal of non-organic logistic support from the theatre would require a corresponding increase on the number at present required from the United Kingdom. Such units are not declared at present, but without them British land force participation in SEATO operations would be impracticable. (c) We have said in ANZAM that we would make armour and medium

artillery and additional engineer support available in Plan 5 (and by implication in Plans 4 and 6). These units are not declared.
