ONG KONG TO COMMONWEALTH OFFICE (D.T.D.)
Telegram No. 1395
CONFIDENTI AL
Addressed to Commonwealth Office telegram No. 1395 of 15 September, Repeated for information to POLAD Singapore,
Schools.
My telegram No. 1385:
Inspection of Communist
Pei Chiao Middle School premises in Hong Kong were inspected today by Education Department Inspectors. Reception more pleasant than at Heung To earlier this week. Fewer portraits of Mac and badges were observed but all students had books of quotations of Mao on their desks. Senior classes had books of Quotations in English as well as Chinese. Some classes chanted in English and Chinese when Inspectors went by their classrooms.
3.
Headmaster asked that Director of Education inter- venes to secure the release of the School's Prefect of Studies (equivalent to Senior Master) and also to stop police inter- ference with his students. After this initial protest, Headmaster and staff became quite friendly and helpful.
4.
The fears expressed in paragraph 2 of my previous telegram not fulfilled. Next week it is planned to inspect three small schools but unless there are any significant developments I do not propose to telegraph results.
