COPY OF PRESS CABLE RECEIVED FROM HONG KONG INFORMATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT ON MARCH 5TH, 1967.

Commonwealth Affairs Secretary, Herbert

Bowden, said on arrival in Hong Kong today, Sunday,

that purpose of his visit was largely to familiarize

and to acquaint himself with conditions in Hong Kong.

Asked about effects of Britain's possible entry into

Common Market on Hong Kong, Mr. Bowden said: "There

is a possibility of the proposal that Hong Kong be

given associate status being put forward in any

resumed negotiations" He said consultations would

have to take place with individual members of

Commonwealth whose requirements are different from

each other but he stressed that Commonwealth position

would be safeguarded in any resumed negotiations on

Britain's entry into European Economic Community.
