HONG KONG BENELUX NEGOTIATION ON COTTON TEXTILES

Proposals For Export Control
The meetings between representatives of the Governments of the
Benelux countries and Hong Kong, which have been taking place in Hong Kong
during the past ten days, were concluded today (Friday).
The negotiations were held pursuant to the request of the Benelux
Governments made in accordance with Article 3 of the Long Torm Arrangement
regarding International Trade in Cotton Textiles. The request concerned
Hong Kong's exports of certain woven cotton textiles to the Benelux countries.
The opportunity was also taken to consult on the operation and
future of Hong Kong's current undertaking to restrain exports to the Benelux
countries of cotton woven shirts, which extends to September 30, 1967.
A joint statement issued at the end of today's meeting indicated
that the two sides had reached agreement on a set of proposals for alleviating
the difficulties the Benelux industry was experiencing as a result of sharply
increased imports from Hong Kong of nightwear, handkerchiefs, bed linen and
household linen of terry cloth, as well as providing for a continuation of
the restraint on shirts for a further twelve months.
