During one of his interviews Knight asked permission to schâ a letter to his father, pointing out that he is a very old man and would be very worried over his well boing. This request was flatly refused. He then asked if he could send a letter, asking a friend in Hong Kong to look after his financial affairs and to inform his father he was in good health; this alternativo was also refused. It was principally due to this lack of consideration as well as the uncertainty of the outcome of any negotiations between the B.T. and 0.7. Authorities, that Knight finally dooided to attempt to escapo. His prolonged incarceration was, of course,
another major incentivo.
17. In response to a request for copies of Hong Kong newspapers, Knight was given the English edition of the Ta Kung Pao! The only other reading. material mado availablo to him were the Thoughts of MAO Two Tung, a photo- graphic magazine of China (China Pictorial?) and N.C.N.A. press releases from Hong Kong. Eo was also told that a tutor, to teach him the Thoughts of MAO, would be provided but he declined the offer. This point was not
really pressed.

Between the 15th and 17th October Knight went on a three-day hunger
strike. This gesture obviously caused his captors some concern as his meal: were subsequently made to look as attractive as possible to encourage him
to eat. However, he gained the impression that even if they had so wished
they were unable to offer him with a better standard and variety of food
than that provided.
19. During his detention he wore Police uniform, less badges of rank, etc. The only clothing given to him were a blue shirt, (which he was wearing underneath his uniform shirt when he returned), two pairs of under- pants, two handkerchiefs and a pair of slacks.

During the night the light in his room was kopt on all the timo. Initially both a ceiling light and a table lamp were used but he oventually persuaded the guards to turn off the former light, complaining that it
provented him sleeping. There were, however, frequent power cute and when
those occurred, an oil lamp was placed in the room. He learned that tha
