An incident occurred on29 May in vicinity.
of rail crossing at Lo Wu on Hong Kong/China
frontier. Party of Hong Kong police had been
firing gas shells on practice range about
1,000 yards south of border. Strong wind had
dispersed gas which had evidently affected
persons from Chinese territory working fields in
British Territory. Crowds of between 200
500 picketed Lo Wu police post and railway
station and minor stone throwing incidents
occurred. Demonstrations continued throughout
night and were dispersed early morning 30 May
by security forces using tear gas. Situation
has since been quiet. Local Chinese border
authorities lodged protest at meeting with
Political Adviser on 1 June. There is little
doubt that incident was spontaneous and there
is no evidence whatever that C.P.G. wish to
treat it as anything other than a purely
local affair.
