is indeed important to keep the dialogue going.
We also agree that it would be useful for the
M.F.A. to be informed of these exchanges.
It is
unacceptable that the Chinese should misrepresent the
terms of our acceptance of border talks and attempt to
dictate the place of meeting.
We attach importance
to the principle that meetings be held alternately
in Hong Kong and Chinese territory. Subject to your
views, we think that, when you have replied to my
telegram No.2205 of 27 October7, Mr. Hopson should
inform the M.F.A. of the exchanges so far, and should
add that it is your view that the meetings be held
alternately at either end of the Lo Wu bridge.
3. Is there a suitable meeting place on our side
of the border at Man Kam To and would it be feasible
to remove the barrièr only for the purpose of the
passage of delegations in both directions?
