Kidnapped Briton flees from China

British police inspector dodged armed Chinese guards, swam two rivers and waded through ditches and miles of ricefields to escape from China today after being held captive for 36 days.

"I waited till one guard was having his bath and the other was on the telephone and then climbed through a back window of the room." said senior In- spector Frank G. Knight, a 37- year-old bachelor from Dagen- ham: Essex, describing his escape from a Chinese army hostel near Shum Chun.

"The border was only five miles, but the way I went it was more like 25 miles," he said. Inspector Frank Knight as soaking wet and shoeless when he was picked up by a military vahiele on the British side of the border.

Officials did not discount the possibility that the Chinese had "allowed" him to escape.
