My telegram No. 1163.
Border.
A group of about 30 Chinese crossed frontier at road crossing point at Man Kam Te at about 09.00 hours on 5 August. They were thought to be labourers crossing to work on our side of border, but on reaching our bridgehead where one policeman and one Gurkha soldier were on duty they turned on them grabbing their weapons. An unsuccessful effort was made by a Police Inspector to retrieve the weapons.
2.
The group from China surrounded and entered our police post near the bridgehead where one Queen's Commissioned Officer, four Gurkha soldiers and one Inspector and seven policemen are on duty. A military force of one company of Gurkhas with armoured car support moved to their assistance and surrounded the post tactically. The group from Chinese territory sought to barter return of the weapons against agreement by us to put up posters at police post.
