Addressed to Foreign Orrice telegram No.1028 of 7 August. Repeated for information to Hong Kong, POLAD Singapore and Saving to Washington.

SO Your telegram No.703:

Border incidents.

As I have had no response to my request for an interview from the Foreign Ministry, I have sent a Note round this afternoon. The text is as in my telegram No.1012 plus an additional penultimate paragraph as follows:

"On the morning of 5 August a group of about thirty Chinese crossed the Hong Kong frontier at the road crossing point at Man Kam. They turned on a policeman and soldier who

were on duty and grabbed their weapons and then surrounded and entered

a police post. It was only after a military force had been moved

up to support the police post that this group was persuaded to hand back the weapons and return to Chinese territory.'

In last paragraph I have amended the words "I have" to read "the British Chargé d'Affaires has".
