People's Daily of 14 August carries short commentator article which praises success of workers from Mankamto in their dealings with the Hong Kong Border Authorities and in particular in extracting signed admissions of guilt from them. Editorial says that Hong Kong Authorities continue to increase the blood debt to the Chinese people which must be repaid and the actions of the Mankamto workers have given them a timely warning.
2. Same paper carries text of statement issued on 12 August in the name of the All China Journalist Federation, People's Daily, and NCNA protesting at arrest by Hong Kong Authorities on 9 August of editors of three Hong Kong papers and manager of Nanchang Printing Company. Statement concludes with usual demands for an immediate end to "white terror" and attacks on newspapers, the immediate release of all arrested, compensation and guarantees against recurrence of similar incidents.
