The Governor of Hong Kong has replied to the points raised
by the Portuguese Arbossador yesterday with Mr. Hohler (see
Commonwelth Office telegram to Hong Kong No. 117 and Hong
Kong telegrem No. 78, attached). - The Governor asks whether
it is necessary to continue the dialogue with the Fortuguese
A bessador at this stage. We think that we should let the
Ar bessedor have replies to the two questions he raised, viz
the n ture of any answers to be given to press enquiries about
preparations for receiving evacuees from Macao end the decision
that the Portuguese must arrange trensport from Macao to Hong
Kong. Our intention should be, however, now that we have
agreed in pricciple to help the Portuguese in transitting
their evacuees through Hong Kong, to leave the detailed
ad: inistrative errangements to be settled by the Hong Kong
authorities with the Portuguese Consul-General.
2. I recommend that Mr. Hohler should su mon the Portuguese
Ambassador and attach talking points based on the Hong Kong
telegram under reference.
5.
Commonwealth Office and Central Department agree.
