The cars have not been touched sine lions and Kemble left. They are therefore likely to be in a poor state having been daubed with slogans, left unattended for two hot and humid months and having had their tyres deflated.

2. There is a possibility that the Portuguese could move the cars to Hong Kong having first made them roadworthy at the naval dockyard in Macao. If this is feasible, we shall need authority to incur any expenditure involved (although we should attempt to get the Portuguese to pay all expenses in getting the cars as far as Hong Kong).

3. An alternative is disposal in Macao or Hong Kong. The second hand car market is not very brisk at present and substantial loss is more than likely. Nevertheless it may be possible to persuade Ho Yin (the Communist millionaire in Macao) to buy both cars and thereby atone in some measure for his admittedly enforced part in the anti-British activities. He has bought previous consuls' cars. We should certainly be willing to try this on.
