RECEIVED IN ARCHIVES No. 63 14 AUGIY
#141 3/3
CONFIDENTIAL No. 1206
Addressed to Commonwealth Office No. 1206 Repeated to Lisbon M510 (please pass)
By 9 August, the Portuguese Consul-General here
had received no information at all about de la Mare's request. Davies, the Assistant Political Adviser therefore visited Macao yesterday and talked with the Governor of Macao and Da Silva the Secretary-General who also claimed to have heard nothing about the request.
2. They advised against even a brief visit to the Consulate in daylight but thought that a night visit by Davies and one other (Laughton - language student) to take out the Confidential material could be arranged so long as it was disguised as far as possible as a social visit. This will probably take place on 12 August, a Saturday, when the tourist traffic is at its peak. We assume your agreement to necessary expenditure on hotel bills etc.

The Governor further agreed that:-
G
(a) the Consul's and Vice-Consul's cars would be cleaned up and their value in Macao assessed it would then be for us to decide whether they should be disposed of in Macao or brought out; and
(b)
their personal effects would be gathered together and sent to Hong Kong as soon as possible.
(Passed as requested)
(Passed to D.S.A.0. for advance copies to de la Mare, Wilson,
Bolland and Denson)
