Thank you for your letter of 23rd July
about Mr. Anthony Grey, your correspondent
in Peking,
As you know, we fully share your anxiety
about Mr. Grey and, within the limitations
imposed by the very strained state of our
relations with China, we have done everything
possible to arrange for him to be visited and
to secure his release. As you yourself have
said, the proposal to free Chinese newspaper
workers imprisoned in Hong Kong, in the hope
of securing Mr. Grey's freedom raises very
far-reaching and delicate questions involving
the maintenance of our authority in the Colony.
I am going into the matter with the Commoh-
wealth Secretary and will give you a substan-
tive reply as soon as I can.
