HONG KONG EVENING NEWS

5. In the Central Court on 4.9.67, the magistrate made an order for the

suppression of the Hong Kong Evening News for six months, following a

case in which three Communist newspapermen were sentenced to three

years' imprisonment on a number of charges, including sedition and

publication of false news.

6.

The Hong Kong Evening News has paid rental up to 20.5.67. The

newspaper was billed in the usual way for the quarter ending 20.8.67.

This demand note for $700 was sent on 6.6.67. It was received by the

newspaper but the account was never paid. On 18th August, D.I.S.

sent the paper another demand note for $700 for the next quarter ending

20.11.67. This second demand note was returned as "unclaimed". Later,

on the advice of Crown Counsel, an amended demand note, for $116.67,

was sent to the Hong Kong Evening News for the period 21st August to

4th September. This demand note was not returned although the account

has not yet been settled.

Therefore, the paper still owes $816.67 on

these two demand notes. If the teleprinter equipment is not recovered

during the entire 6-month period, the I.S.D. stand to lose $1,400 plus
