Addressed to Foreign Office telegram No. 562 of 7 August Repeated for information to Peking, Hong Kong and Saving to POLAD Singapore and Washington
Attack on Chinese Embassy here on 5 August.
Following is Summary of version in local Press on 7 August.
Begins.
Some 300 members of youth organisations tried to hand into Embassy a Resolution condemning subversive activities of Embassy officials. Having been refused admission they broke down main gate and stormed into Embassy compound. They broke windows, ransacked buildings and damaged everything within reach. Indonesian Security Guards on Embassy fired in air to disperse demonstrators. Shots fired at the same time from Embassy Buildings, presumably by Chinese officials, wounded four Indonesians including a Security Guard. Later same day Indonesian Foreign Ministry rejected protest by Chinese Charge d'Affaires because it gave a distorted account of the demonstration.
2.
Ends.
Indonesian Press also points out that the Youth Front involved had earlier urged the Government to sever diplomatic relations with Peking on ground that Chinese Embassy was a centre of underground activity to restore Communist power in Indonesia and to worsen the political and economic situation. 3. Indonesian Foreign Minister at present in Bangkok is. reported here as having said that the trouble originated with resurrection of an old Dutch Law prohibiting building of compound or garden walls here more than one and half meters high. When this Law was revived last week it was the occasion for extensive Press comment directed at Chinese Embassy, whose walls. are higher. In addition, Indonesian officials have recently been quoted as saying that arms were being collected inside the Embassy and that foreign Chinese were passing dud cheques in effort to sabotage Indonesia's economic and political stabilisation programme.
Foreign Office please pass Saving to Washington 37.
