Proposed reply
Royal Naval Officers take part in the consultations between US representatives in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Government which were referred to by my Hon Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs on 17th July (Official Report, 236 written). Visits of US naval ships to Hong Kong are solely for rest and recreation, and on request Royal Naval officers may assist in arranging the provision of berthing and certain other facilities of the kind normally afforded during such visits.
