Washington No.26

(Commonwealth Office please pass), POLAD Singapore No.19.

The two main Hong Kong left-wing papers this

morning have on their Hong Kong news pages, articles about the arrival yesterday of Admiral Hyland and the flagship

of the U.S. Seventh Fleet (THE PROVIDENCE). This is taken as further evidence of the use of Hong Kong by the U.S. as a military base. The visits of other prominent U.S. military commanders last year and the current visit of Admiral Hyland are the subject of critical comment. The paper comments that whether or not this is closely related to the arrival yesterday of the Chief of the General Staff 'is a matter worthy of attention'.
