(1) Agreement in the border talks was reached on 25 Nov.

Yesterday the two Hong Kong policemen who inadvertently rode across the Man Kam To bridge on a motor cycle on 29 Sep (SEACOS 152 para 1D refers) were returned to Hong Kong in exchange for 5 mainland Chinese. Also returned was the Sterling SMG one magazine and two rounds of ammunition snatched by Chinese farmers near Ta Kau Ling on 11 Aug, and Senior Inspector Knight's belongings. The Man Kam To bridge was reopened. (2) There have been four minor incidents along the border during

the week. Three were at Sha Tau Kok involving grenade and stone throwing and the firing of two shots from across the border, one of which landed at the feet of a Gurkha sentry. At Ta Kau Ling there was a demonstration on Saturday by about 25 CT civilians, obviously for propaganda purposes.

B. Bomb incidents. Planting of live bombs averaged about 4 a day

during the week with a surge to 13 on Saturday when one bomb was thrown at a sentry box outside 18 IT Regt RA at Sek Kong but which caused no casualties.

A. On Friday evening a curfew was imposed after demonstrations against devaluation ended in communal rioting in which 7 people were killed and 42 seriously injured. One S/Sgt was injured when his car was stopped near Minden Barracks and he was assaulted by a mob. other damage to British or Australian service personnel or property has been reported. The curfew was raised for 2 hours this morning and it is intended to raise it again for a two and a half hour period this afternoon.

Families are confined to quarters and the British Army School is remaining closed today. Sentries have been discreetly mounted in married quarter areas. RAAF Butterworth have been reinforced by two Belvedere helicopters which will be used to support Western Hill radar station and also to bring in a company from the Gurkha
