A.
INTERRUPTION OF FOOD SUPPLIES
Extent of Interruption
1.
There has been some interruption in the supply from China of pigs
lu

and to a lesser extent of fruit and vegetables. The distribution and sale
of food (particularly rice) has also been affected by withdrawals of labour
and by intimidation of distributors and sellers.
C.P.G. Involvement
2. There is no evidence that food supplies from China are being
deliberately withheld. The difficulties have arisen from the refusal
of transport workers to handle supplies arriving at the frontier.
Alterative Sources of Supply
3. Alternative supplies could be obtained if the need arose, but there
must inevitably be a time lag in organising these which could cause some
shortages to arise.
4.
The position on major items of foodstuffs is as follows:-
(a) Rice. 30% of imports come from China. Existing stocks are
large and, although in present world market conditions of
scarcity it may be difficult to find alternative supplies, we
would hope to make good much of what China failed to supply.
(b) Meat. 85% of Hong Kong's consumption of pigs and 65% of
cattle comes from China. Present stocks are good. Alternative
sources exist Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and Taiwan.
