there is a great deal or dissension round what you might call

fat the millionaire wing of the communist party,, "the black cats"

and the militant FTU set who are carrying on, but, of course, so long as Peking Daily tells them they have to struggle to pull down British imperialism, that they, the chaps in Hong Kong, are the chaps who have to accomplish it, so they have to go on with these harassing tactics. As I say, each gambit as they have played it we have managed to control really pretty

well. We can go on doing it, I have no doubt about it, as long as it is left to the compatriots in Hong Kong, we can cope with

them.

What is important, of course, is that people outside Hong Kong do not lose confidence in Hong Kong. If they start no longer ordering our goods from our factories and so on and our economy starts to collapse then we will be in difficulties. In fact, sometimes I am as frightened of our friends as of our

enemies in this situation.

Would it not be better if some of you asked me,

questions now so I know what you are particularly interested in?

What is the student situation, Sir Daviä,

QUESTION:

at Hongwa and (1)

SIR DAVID TRENCH:

schoolf?

Hongwa is a hard line militant

communist school but that does not mean to say all the children are necessarily communist. Very often parents put their children

in these schools without realising what they are quite.

QUESTION: They are being used?

SIR DAVID TRENCH: Not to any tremendous extent.

They were used for a while to beef up the demonstrations but of course the students' unions, the two universities and so on

Sout

were one of the first organisations to come out in support of

theGovernment.
