Confrontation with the Communists.

Paragraph 3 of my telegram 744 refers.

From time to time we have sent you brief translations of articles appearing in the local

Communist press, but these do not give a true indication of how very bad this campaign of sedition and intimidation is. In order that you may have some idea as to what we are having to tolerate, I am therefore enclosing some translations of typical articles which are appearing in the Communist press daily: I am also sending you three copies of the English edition of the Ta Kung Pao (please see my telegram 776 para.1(g)

of 5th June). This latter publication is, if anything, a watered-down version of the Chinese,

As I forecast in my telegram under reference, public opinion is becoming more and more critical of our failure to act against the Communist press; I fear that firm action against it is getting more and more difficult to avoid.
