SITREP as at 15 1700 hrs.

Yesterday there were three token stoppages,

one

serious and one of which in the building industry, was a failure. The labour situation in Government Departments and commercial firms affected by last week's disputes continues to improve slowly. There have been two violent reactions by the Communists to attempts to remove posters which could presage a new wave of militancy. The All Chinese Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) has made a gift of (H.K.) 10 million to the All Circles Anti Persecution Struggle Committee (ACAPSC).

2. Once again there was only marginal support to calls for strike action yesterday. The gift of 10 million which the Communists claim brings the ACAPSC funds up to 15 million dollars will provide the cash needed to pay comfort money and subsistence to strikers; a fresh round of token strikes is thus more likely. Taikoo dockyard reopened without incident yesterday and has now re-engaged over four- fifths of its labour force. The six dockyard employees arrested as a result of the disturbances in the dockyard on 6 June appeared in court on 13 June and were remanded without incident. The Star ferry is slowly bringing more boats.into operation though still providing only a limited service. manning position has improved slightly in both the Government dockyard and the Gas Company.
