The Governorship of Hong Kong

You asked in March that, I should

consult you in good time when we started

thinking about a successor to the

present Governor of Hong Kong,

Sir David Trench, whose normal five

year term of office ends next April.

2. After giving the matter very

careful consideration I recommend that

we should not look for a successor at

this stage but that Sir David Trench's

term should be extended by one year:

that is to say until April 1970.

This recommendation is based on

four main reasons. First, the

situation in Hong Kong (which involves

our relations with China) is still

delicate and the continuing presence

at the helm of Sir David Trench, whose

experience of the Colony and whose

grasp of the problems there has

impressed me, would be invaluable over
