As the present term of office of His Excellency the Governor, Sir David Trench, will expire in the early part of next year, the Chinese community here, represented by the hai Fong Associations and other various public organisations and their leaders in different walks of life, have during the past few weeks voiced strongly through the medium of the local Chinese press their wish and request that sir David's term of office in Hong Kong be renewed. The Kai Fong Associations and some of the public organisations have also made
to
written representations to the Colonial Secretary and to the Secretary for Chinese Affairs, for transmission to the secretary of State for Commonwealth affairs, urging the extension of Sir David's service here at the conclusion of his present term of office.
The community as a whole recognises and appreciates the sterling qualities and leadership of Sir David, as amply borne out by the record of progress and development achieved in different spheres of the Colony's activities during his term of office. Such a record is, we respectfully submit, astounding by any standard, having regard to the Colony's limitations and its many formidable problems, apart from its geographical situation. More particularly Sir David's outstanding performance and leadership during the disturbances last year will always be remembered by the community. It is clear that the community has absolute confidence in him, and you will recall that the general public was equally solidly behind him during these disturbances.
We feel that it is our duty to convey to the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs the wish and feeling of the community as a whole, coupled with the request that effect be given to such wish and
