I attach a draft reply to the letter on this folder addressed by Mr. Royle to the Secretary of State.
2.
Sir David Trench returned to liong Kong at the middle of Hay. I think the idea of extending Sir David's term of office without specifying any period would present considerable difficulties. The Prime Minister's Office has already been informed that the Secretary of State no longer feels any anxiety over the question of Sir David Trench's health. The Prime Minister has indicated that he accepts the proposal to extend Sir David's term of office provided that the Foreign Secretary agrees with him and we still avait the latter's views on the matter.
