A first step in the conversion pro- ject was the introduction of a podium to link the four wings of the tower block. This gave more expression to the building and at the same time pro- vided the additional stiffening required to the existing frame. It was achieved by
a regular spacing of exposed columns to take a large overhang and a surrounding balcony at first floor level. Troughs for a variety of plants
built into the balcony soften the struc- tural expression and add a tropical touch.
With a floor area of 23,000 sq. ft., the podium block was adequate to ac- commodate most of the hotel facilities and was economic so far as structural and hotel maintenance was concerned. Certain public areas such as restaurant and conference hall were too large to be accommodated in the podium and these spaces are extended beyond the line of the podium in a boldly defined
external expression.
The complete structure is of rein- forced concrete, finished in marbletex, a combination of marble chips and resin applied by spraying, and shanghai plaster.
A horizontal emphasis has not been allowed to predominate with the ex- pression of exposed beams; it has been subdued by vertical connections of windows and aluminium sun shields. Precast concrete window units of 2in. thickness are used throughout, along
