at a maximum of 375 amp. A Ruston Model 2YWA diesel with a rating of 27 h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m., supplies power for the machine, transmitting its drive through an 8-in diameter (216-mm.) flexible pad fitted between two machin ed half-couplings located by means of three pins and rubber liners; and the generator, of the cumulatively-wound brush-shift type, has its brush rigging mounted on a spring-loaded carrier controlled by a single hand wheel.
A slotted-pole field system gives the necessary dropping-voltage characteris- tics with a minimum of external resist-
ance.
The generator assembly is construc- ted on a welded-steel frame, with all rotating parts statically and dynami- cally balanced; end-plate ball bearings are fitted throughout.
The infinitely-variable current-con- trol hand wheel features colour coding, as does the voltage control, and a dynamically-balanced turbine-type fan gives fully-controlled cooling under all climatic conditions. Welded heavy-steel sections form the base plate, which in- corporates machine pads and jig-drilled holes to maintain accurate alignment of the engine and generator. Fitted with high-speed Flexitor undergear and overrun brakes, the set measures 17 ft. 8 in. long (including the tow bar) by 4 ft. 3 in. high by 3 ft. 6 in. wide (2.337 by 1.295 by 1.067 m.).
The makers are Welding Industries Ltd., Blackswarth Road, Bristol, UK.
GENERATOR
The new Dieselite series RDP gene- rators are suitable for supplying emer- gency power in hospitals, police and fire brigade headquarters. For the cons-
Dieselite RDP generator
truction industry the sets can be supplied trailer-mounted and fitted with a weather-proof housing.
Weight of the basic unit is 920 lb. and measurements are 54 in. long x 22 in. wide x 29% in. high, when contained in a weatherproof housing.
The generator is driven by a four- cycle, four-cylinder Perkins diesel en- gine. There are twelve 50-cycle models with outputs from 8 KVA to 15.6 KVA, and twelve 50-cycle models with out- puts from 10 KVA to 18.75 KVA. Output voltages, 1 or 3 phase, are in the range 120 volts to 416 volts. Wind- ings are impregnated to resist damp.
The makers are G & M Power Plant Co. Ltd., Whitehouse Road, Ipswich, UK.
LOADING SHOVEL
A new loading shovel with a maxi- mum payload of 9,000 lb. (4082 kg) and a load-over height of 12 ft. 9 in. (3,89 m) has been introduced by Muir. Hill Ltd., Bristol Road, Gloucester, UK.
The design incorporates a 9 ft. 6 in. (2,90 m) long, centrally mounted beam
Muir-Hill B9000 loader
for lifting the bucket. The position of the beam improves the balance of the machine and reduces the risk of the linkage being bent by shock loads. A side-mounted cab constructed of steel safety glass is fitted as standard equip-
ment.
The B9000 is powered by a Perkins 4-stroke, eight-cylinder diesel engine with four forward speeds and two re- verse. The machine is capable of a maxi- mum speed of 26.6 m.p.h. (41,2 k.p.h.) on the road, 6,68 m.p.h. (10,75 k.p.h.) at work and 9.1 m.p.h. (14,65 k.p.h.) in reverse.
EARTH BORER
The British Steel Piling Co. Ltd., Claydon, Ipswich, Suffolk, UK, has de- veloped a new earth boring machine, the Terradrill Model 1250.
It is suitable for drilling holes with bucket and reamer up to 96 in. in dia- meter and with an auger 60 in., to an approximate depth of 100 ft. with a standard triple telescoping kelly. Power comes from a 110 h.p. diesel engine, through a torque converter, to give a maximum stall torque of 54,000 lb. ft. at the kelly.
The attachment will mount on any crane capable of lifting 21,400 lb. at 15 ft. radius with a minimum boom
length of 60 ft. when used with stand- ard triple telescoping kelly.
HAMMER DRILL
A new version of the Red Head 606 hammer drill, which is capable of dril- ling a 1⁄44in. diameter hole 2in. deep in concrete in five seconds, has better balance and easier handling features.
Its high impact case, made of a sandwich of plastic and structural alu- minium gives added strength without any increase to the total weight of 6lb.
The tool is a two-speed, adjustable impact hammer/drill with a 3.9 amp motor. It is adjustable from 37,000 blows a minute at 3000 r.p.m. to 15,000 blows a minute at 1250 r.p.m.
Red Head 606 hammer drill
Drilling diameters are up to 3/8in. in masonry with full speed and impact, up to in. in steel and 11⁄2in. in wood. 220 volt or 110 volt models are avail- able.
The makers are Phillips Drill Co. Inc., Michigan City, Indiana, U.S.A. Far East sales manager is Mr. W.R. San- born, P.O. Box 28, Tanglin Post Office, Singapore 10.
REFLECTIVE INSULATION Comprehensive information on the thermal insulation of buildings when using reflective foil type materials is contained in a new technical book, 'Reflective Insulation and the Control of Thermal Environment'.
The book was prepared by the Re- search and Development Goup of St. Regis-ACI Pty. Ltd., working under Mr. David Hassall, technical service manager. It is printed by W.A. Pepper- day Pty. Ltd., Sydney, and covers all the necessary technical background and knowledge to allow Sisalation to be used in any type of structure.
