HE Philippine Government has now embarked on a project that has been the dream of past adminis- trations--the construction of the Pan- Philippine highway to link Luzon, the biggest island in the archipelago. the Visayas (central part of the Philippines) and Mindanao island (southernmost and second biggest island).

The proposed Pan-Philippine high- way is designed to provide the most

direct land route between Luzon and Mindanao, through links that will be established in the islands of Samar and Leyte in the Visayas. It consists of 2,043 kilometers of existing roads and 36 kilometers of new roads pro- posed for construction, including four major strait crossings.

It starts from Aparri in the far north of Luzon island and ends at Davao City in southern Mindanao.

way is in Luzon, from Aparri through Ilagan, Bayombong, Cabanatuan City, Manila, Lucena City and Sorsogon: 408 kilometers span the Visayas through Allen, Calbayog City, Tac- loban City, Abuyog, Sogod and the Panaon Island; and 405 kilometers is in Mindanao through Surigao, Butuan City and finally to Davao City.

The programme envisages the con- creting and widening of the main national roads on the route of the Pan-Philippine highway, the cutting of diversion routes on circuitous portions; and the replacement of tem- porary bridges with permanent struc-

tures.

The plan also entails the acquisition of ferries to connect the water gaps between the southern tip of Sorsogon Province and the northern tip of Samar island: the construction of an 835 meter bridge between the nearest points of Samar and Leyte: and the construction of another 110-meter bridge which will connect the southern tip of Surigao del Norte in the island of Mindanao.

A concrete circumferential along the coast of Mindanao will be improved but the main highway will take off from Surigao to Butuan City and cut through the heart of the re- gion down to Davao City.
