AN
OASIS of lawns, pools, trees and paved public walkways is to be created in the business centre of Hong Kong.
The site is the area known as Statue Square, which till now has been occupied by surface car parks and lawns railed off from the public. It is bordered on the west by the new Prince's Building and the Mandarin Hotel, on the east by the colonnaded Courts of Justice building, and on the south by Des Voeux Road and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank head- quarters building.
Wardley Street which at present runs through the site from south to north will be closed and will dis- appear. Chater Road, bisecting the site from east to west, may also be closed at some future date when traffic in the central area is rerouted. Then this part of Chater Road will become a paved piazza and a broad walk on the south side of Chater Road will be extended to meet the main fountain feature on the north side.
