torque converter, which has a 3 to 1 stall ratio. The converter and en- gine form a match- ed unit to give full power at all con- ditions of load.

The converter output is to a three-speed, full reversing, constant mesh power trans- mission unit which forward gives speeds of up to 3.6 m.p.h. in 1st range. 7.7 m.p.h. in 2nd range and

21.3 m.p.h. in 3rd range. Reverse speeds are up to 4.25, 9.8 and 25.7 m.p.h.. in the three ranges.

Two wheel drive, for transit, can be effected by disconnecting the drive to the rear axle by the operation of a single lever at the side of the opera- tor's seat.

Two double acting boom rams of 41⁄2 in. dia. with chromium plated piston rods are located well forward of the operator. These raise the boom in 8.8 sec. and lower it in 5.8 sec. A single double-acting bucket ram of 5 in. dia. is employed for bucket con- trol.

The H-50B has an overall width of 7 ft. 7 in.. a length of 18 ft. 41⁄2 in.. and a height of 7 ft. 10 in. The turning radius is 20 ft. 9 in., measur- ed at the outside rear corner of the grille. Total operating weight is 15,780 lb.

TANDEM ROLLER

Road Speed Variable Without Gear Changing

HYDROSTATIC transmission is a fea- ture of the new 8 to 12 ton Wake- field Hydropower tandem roller being produced by British Jeffrey-Diamond. Ltd.. Wakefield, Yorks.. UK.

A constant high torque at any en- gine speed allows infinite variations in road speed between 1⁄2 and 51⁄2 m.p.h. without clutch or gear chang- ing. Constant speeds can be maintain- ed regardless of gradient.

When the operator positions the cam in neutral, by moving the one lever control, dynamic power absorp- tion braking results, without wear to the vehicle's service brakes.

Rolling pressure, uniform across

the full face of the roll. is 272 lb. per in. with full ballast.

The power unit is a Ford 2703 six cylinder diesel of 96 h.p. Power hy- draulic steering is standard.

Agents include: Blair and Co.. Ltd.. Hong Kong: National Mer- chandising Corporation. Manila: Anglo-Thai Corporation. Ltd., Bang- kok: and Taiwan Motor Co.. Ltd.. Taipei. New agents are soon to be appointed for Malaysia.

MOBILE CRANE

30 ft. Boom Folds for Travelling

INTRODUCTION of a truck-mounted crane with a lifting capacity of 15 long tons (British rating) is announc- ed by John Allen and Sons (Oxford) Ltd., Cowley, Oxon, UK.

It is the T. 154 which is mounted on a heavy duty carrier chassis, con- structed of 20 in. x 61⁄2 in. steel joists, reinforced and welded.

a

Power for the chassis is from Leyland 600 diesel engine, with Ley- land clutch and five-speed gearbox giving road speeds up to 27.5 m.p.h. Power assisted steering is fitted. For the crane superstructure a Ford 592E six cylinder diesel is used, developing 75.5 b.h.p. at 1.800 r.p.m.

The boom of the T.154 is of high yield stress tubular steel, with rectan- gular main members. The basic

boom is 30 ft, and folds for tra-

velling; three further 10 ft. sections can be carried on the chassis and the boom may be extended to 100 ft. plus a 20 ft. fly-jib.

All crane motions are air-con- trolled for smooth, precise operation. without fatique to the operator. Twin hoist drums are incorporated, the main drum having power lowering and gravity lowering as standard.

WINCH

Large Drum Accommodates 400 ft. of Wire Rope

THE large cable drum оп the Thompson Model 64 heavy-duty winch will take 400 ft. of 15/16 in. dia. wire rope, yet its net weight of only 12 cwt. allows it to be readily transported from site to site.

It is of welded box-frame construc- tion, has steel machine-cut gears, and adjustable winding handles;

two

easily accessible grease nipples are fitted to the phosphor-bronze bearings of the winding shafts.

The cable drum can be disengaged for free spooling by raising the lever on the third reduction shaft: this re- leases the shaft and enables the pin- ion to slide out of mesh with the drum. For safety, Model 64 is fitted with an 8-point ratchet and pawl, to- gether with a quick-release screw- brake operated through the chain of gearing.

An optional extra is a preset safety brake which, when adjusted to the capacity of the winch, automa-
