tion is to provide a terminus for the cross-harbour tunnel which is to be constructed within the next five years and which will surface in the vicinity of the Yacht Club.

Sufficient land must be produced within that time to allow for the fly- overs and roadworks that will enable the tunnel to connect with the exist-

ing road system. As the availability of filling materials is the critical fac-

tor in achieving this, only sufficient reclamation will be carried out in the first instance to allow the tunnel to operate.

This will involve reclaiming a strip of land 200 ft. wide along the entire Wanchai waterfront. This in turn will require the removal of two ferry terminals and in order to provide al- ternative berths for these ferries, a sufficient amount of the future sea-

wall and a ferry pier must be con- structed and the reclamation brought out to it before the existing ferry piers can be demolished.

The ferry pier will be of the same design as the two piers in the central scheme and the seawall will also be of standard design with a slight mo- dification to enable the blocks to be keyed together to give added stability. as 20 ft. depth of water is required alongside compared with 12 ft. 6 in. at the central reclamation.

Six Acres Formed

So far two contracts have been let for seawall foundations and one for construction of the section of seawall and the ferry pier which are required early on in the scheme. An area has also been opened to public dumping and already about six acres of land has been formed. A further area of Wanchai Bay has also been allocated for the dumping of suitable material dredged from other schemes through- out the harbour.

Eventually when the whole scheme is completed, about 90 acres of land will have been formed and this will probably be used for residential de- velopment, cargo handling areas and open spaces for recreation in addi- tion to the road network and struc- tures contingent on the tunnel.

UNCHANGING SUPREMACY

WING CO'S precast R.C. Piles are preferred by Constructional Engineers for their unchang- ing supremacy, because you can inspect them before driving and get the required set direct on the pile. Every precast R.C. Pile driven to the required set is a tested pile.
