bays) with transverse wires increased to 5 gge. at 6in. c/c. Top supports were reinforced with BRC No. 6.
At certain sections it was necessary to increase the wall thickness to 6in. for local stresses just above first floor but such sections were a small per- centage of the whole. The walls at lifts, ducts and end walls were made 6in. and acted as vertical stif- feners (diaphragms) for wind and other loadings.
The framing around the many openings in the walls presented some difficulties. Openings were required for doors, sanitary installation, access hatches, corridors, etc.
The roof was constructed in deep
hollow block slabs to accommodate the roof drains and pipe ducts and yet present a smooth ceiling soffit to the rooms below.
Sections of the roof were designed to carry machinery and equipment, such as the air conditioning cooling tower and the water tanks. There is also a concrete plenum for exhausting from the bathrooms by mechanical extraction.
Dining hall
At the rear of the hotel a large restaurant has been constructed with a clear span of 70ft. The roof is constructed of castellated universal
beams (Fig. 6) with steel framing to obtain the architectural shape required while accommodating the air condi- tioning equipment and other services. (Fig. 9).

structure
Apart from the main other lesser structures were ге- quired: 20ft. x 200ft. x 8ft. drain, culverts, front canopy, sewer ejector pit, oil tank pit, fountains, retaining walls, boiler house, electrical sub- stations, employees amenities, swim- ming pool, etc. Each of these is itself structurally interesting but space does not permit detailed discussion.
