Reinforced
Concrete Detailing by John A. Barker. Published by Oxford University Press. 12in. × 81⁄2 in.; pp.350 +xx; over 1,000 illustrations; numerous tables, index. Price 84s.
Every man who has done any rein- forced concrete detailing has longed for a book like this. Books on design have multiplied over the years, but until now there has been no book on detailing. In a way this is rather strange, because every design has to be detailed.
Fifty years ago a major trouble in the industry was an almost complete lack of standardisation in virtually everything. Now we have standard specifications and codes of practice pouring out of the committee com- plex at a rate high enough to satisfy most productivity-minded people. So it is as well that the "detailing" gap has at last been filled, and filled so

As pointed out in the introduction to the book:-"Detail drawings are primarily produced to pass on in- formation.... they are the language of the reinforced concrete industry and must therefore be drawn in a standard way." The book has been divided into four parts: general in- formation, concrete members, non- structural information (not too happy a title for this section, perhaps), ap- pendices.
But there is no absolute standard yet for detailing, and the author gives the various present-day accepted methods in an impartial manner be- fore setting out his personal recom- mendations in an attempt to bring re- inforced concrete detailing to standard that can be readily under- stood by all concerned in the industry.
a
The book, after describing the general principles of reinforced con- crete, considers each part of a struc- ture separately. Items covered in Part 2 are floor slabs, hollow floors,
flat slabs, beams, columns, founda- tions, ties, staircases, retaining walls, reservoirs, tanks, hoppers, culverts, piles, pile caps, precast members generally. Part 3 deals with joints, hinges, bearings, fixings, bar marks, bending schedules, checking, drawing office practice.
The author describes the process of reinforced concrete detailing step by step. In the case of beams, for in- stance, the reader is taken, in easy stages, from the detailing of a simple lintel to the relatively complicated continuous haunched beam. It seems reasonable to assume that the text will meet all the needs of architecture, building and civil engineering students who require a knowledge of this sub- ject.
The format is designed to facilitate the use of the book next to a drawing board. There is a comprehensive sys- tem of indexing and cross referenc- ing. The material is up to date to accord with British Standards and Codes of Practice.
