A program called the Digital Ter- rain Model has been developed to enable road designers to obtain earth- work quantities. Various alignments can be applied to a given band of ter- rain data and the effect of modifica-
tions to the plan and profile can be assessed with great speed to identify the most economical layout.
Using this program on the Univac
1107 computer. the consultants an- alysed the alignments and earthworks for a proposed high capacity dual three-lane road between Tsuen Wan and Castle Peak, New Territories, to obtain the most economical design. Flyover beam design
The design of prestressed concrete beams depends partly on the cross section properties of the beam. It is
not difficult to calculate these but as it involves several steps, the calculation is time-consuming and prone to arith- metical errors.
A program for calculating section properties has been written for the Olivetti 101. The section is first divid- ed into rectangles, and the depth and breadth of each rectangle is then fed into the computer, which prints out the required information, including
