rocky sub-soil and concrete founda- tions are taken down to solid ground without the need for piling.

Accommodation

All the hospital's engineering ser- vices and equipment, which includes boilers, a transformer and an incinera- tor for the destruction of waste, are located on the sub-lower ground floor to keep the noisy areas from the other departments.

entrance, a resuscitation room, five examination and treatment rooms, an injection room, an office for the nurs- ing sister, duty room and storage.

To the other side of the waiting area are a medical officer's office and consulting room, a treatment room, minor operating theatre and an X-ray department. This layout makes it pos- sible to divide the patients into two streams, those requiring immediate re- suscitation or attention and those attending for follow-up treatment or examination.

The general out-patients depart- ment and maternal and child health

centre are placed on the ground floor to provide the most convenient accessi- bility for the patients. Each department takes up half the floor space and has a separate entrance and waiting area, approached from Queen's Road East.

On the first floor are a skin clinic and social hygiene clinic, while on the second floor are a maternal and child health service headquarters and train- ing school, library, conference room, lecture and demonstration rooms. Quar- ters for eight nurses or midwives are also included on this floor.

The third floor contains the 38-bed casualty ward and the fourth floor the 36-patient maternity ward. Staff quar- ters and a canteen are located on the top floor, food being delivered to the lower floors by means of dumb waiters.
