West's shell pile is RIGID
because it is DRIVEN.
The ratio between skin friction, (the consolidating effect of the earth round the pile), and toe resistance in the load- bearing stratum, can be calculated and the final "set" predetermined according to load required.
It is SOLID because the concrete core, reinforced as required, is cast after driving, providing a solid UNSTRESSED column from stratum to structure.
