NEW INSTALLATION FOR PURIFYING WATER
The
MESSRS. SHEWAN, TOMES & CO. LTD. of Chung Tin Building, Hongkong, in conjunction with MESSRS. LEIGH & ORANGE as architects, have recently installed a complete water purification plant in the Ladies Recreation Club, Hong- kong, to purify the water in the new swimming pool. purification plant which was supplied by BELL BROTHERS (MANCHESTER 1927) LTD. for whom SHEWAN TOMES are sole local Agents, is specially designed to ensure economical running, and the materials of which it is constructed are selected for durability. so minimising the maintenance costs.
The capacity of the Pool is 150,000 gallons, and this volume of water is purified in 6 hours, [this being the maximum time allowed under the local Public Health Ordinance for all water to pass through a filtration plant] at the rate of 25000 gallons per hour. The water is drawn from the deepest point of the main Swimming Pool through an outlet grid, connected to a suction main, through which it is drawn to the Filter House.

The water first of all passes through a suitably designed strainer box for removing the larger impurities and suspended matter. From there it is picked up by the Circulating Pump and delivered to the Filters, but immediately on leaving the
Pump, the water is treated with a coagulating reagent,
(Sulphate of Alumina) followed by Filtration and the addition of Soda, for neutralising the acidic action of the Alumina. These Chemicals are administered by the 'BELL' Pump Type Chemical Apparatus, delivering a constant quantity of Chemical solutions to the water. A water Flow Indicator is provided, which indicates the quantity of water passing through the Plant in gallons per hour.
The Filters comprise two 8'0" diam. Vertical Type Pressure Filters, having a total filtration area of 100 sq. ft. and operat- ing at a filtration speed of 250 gallons per square ft. per hour. On leaving the Filters, the water is reoxygenated by passing through an Air Venturi, and Aeration Chamber, in order to ensure a bright and sparkling water entering the Bath. After aeration, sterilisation of the water is effected by the "BELL' Pump Type Sterilising Solution Set, using a solution of Sodium Hypochlorite. The water is then delivered back to the Pool through inlets at the shallow end. A specially designed 'BELL' Suction Sweeper is also provided, together with con- nections and piping for the removal of foreign matter from the floor of the main pool.
The cycle of operation is continued until the filters require washing, which is indicated by the pressure gauges provided. The filters are then washed by agitation of the filter bed with compressed air. All the impurities are washed away by means of a reverse flow of filtered water.
Particular attention has been given to the design of the strainers and collecting pipes at the bottom of the filters, the resulting system ensures that all parts of the filtering medium are in equal operation. and when the filters are being washed, the air and washwater are equally and evenly distributed to all parts of the filter bed. The design of strainers also ensures that one grade of sand alone may be used, and as this grade is a very fine one, the whole of the filter medium is available for filtration and can be subjected to violent agitation during washing periods.
