end, of similar volume of water, would have cost rather more and provided only half the swimming surface of the 6,200 sq. ft., near square, fan-shaped pool settled upon.

Changes of colour in the pool basin mark its uses: white mosaic tiles with dark brown lines for the six racing lanes down the centre of the pool, and dark blue mosaic tiles for the wings - primarily for learners. Platforms and steps down at the two wide corners of the pool, which enable non-swimmers to enter the water at waist level, are finished in dark green mosaic tiles as is the deck coping. The walls of the pool are finished in dark green glazed wall tiles with white terrazzo scum channels. Side decks, 20 and 15 ft. wide, are paved in non-slip patterned and washed granolithic.

Circulation of the pool water is by the Central Surflo system. Incoming water is distributed by a nozzled inlet channel along the whole length of the pool floor. Scum channels return soiled water to a balance tank which stores water displaced by wave action.

Plant room and balance tank are concealed under the deck. In the plant room, which is approached from a deepened natural cutting on the west side of the pool, a horizontal pressure sand filter has been provided of suf- ficient capacity to serve later a small seperate diving pool.

The sports building, across a garden and screened by a natural belt of Causarina trees, provides games equip- ment storage for the playing fields as well as changing and sanitary facilities for swimmers and instructor. Again, not forgetting the future, provision has been made for a later additional storey.

The total cost of the science wing, including science room furnitures, the sports building, swimming pool and pool plant is HK$670,000.
